Contemporary Painting Course

Develop your painting skills and learn how to develop interesting contemporary paintings using a variety of art mediums and techniques!

The course will look at painting in its contemporary form. Through set exercises and personal experimentation you will learn the practices and visual ideas that inform painting in the 21st Century. This course suits beginner students looking to familiarise themselves and experiment with painting and painting media.

Through set exercises you will be introduced to the many ways one can approach painting and to painting's conceptual possibilities.

Topic Areas Covered:

  • Getting to know different painting mediums and materials such as brushes, paints, mediums, canvas and paper.
  • Drawing as a preliminary to painting using a variety of mediums
  • Translating the elements of your drawing into a painting
  • Collage using found imagery, textures and materials
  • Painting from life, explore your observational skills and experiment with application of paint
  • Manipulate and experiement with subject matter and scale
  • Masking and mark making: explore hard edge abstract painting through the use of masking and mark making with objects and surfaces

Required Equipment:

Bring any art materials you already have at home. In particular you will need the following items:

  • Acrylic Paints: Raw Umber, Cadmium or Spectrum Yellow, Cadmium or Spectrum Red, Alizarin Crimson, Ultramarine Blue, Cobalt Blue, Ivory Black, Titanium White
  • Oil/Acrylic sketch paper or canvas boards
  • Graphite pencils/charcoal
  • Stretched canvas (suggested 12" x 16" or 16" x 20")
  • Small container or Gesso Primer
  • Disposable Palette
  • Palette knife
  • Ruler and scissors
  • Rags and paper towel
  • Glass jar with lid for brush cleaning
  • Masking tape
  • A variety of brushes, flat, round and filbert, ranging in sizes
  • 2" house painting brush

Course Duration:

6 Weeks (9am - 3:30pm) on Saturday's.

Course Fees

$650.00. A $200.00 minimum non-refundable deposit is required to enrol and secure a position in the course. The balance of the course fees is due on the course commencement date. (A 5 week direct-debit payment plan with integraPAY is available, information will be sent to students with their confirmation of enrolment).
